BEFORE CONTACTING US
1. When answering the phone at the DMOE, the coordinators are required to answer in Korean. This could be surprising for NETs trying to call in. Tip: If a male voice answers the phone, ask for Ezekiel. If it's a female voice, ask for Keiko. If neither of us are there, just send us an email!
2. Often when NETs call, it does not show the school you are calling from, please let us know who we are speaking with when you call!
3. Please note DMOE staff are at their desks on weekdays from 9AM - 6PM with a lunch break from 12PM - 1PM, where they will be unable to receive phone calls.
4. Click here for a tutorial on how to find the coordinators on Daegu messenger!

Most schools in Daegu use Daegu Messenger for internal communication. While it is primarily used for sharing information and communicating within your school, you can also use it to contact other Daegu teachers, including the NET coordinators at the DMOE.If you would like to send a message to one of the coordinators, you can search for their name in the 조직도 tab and follow the image example below. If you prefer to call them from your office phone, you can click the phone icon to the right of their name.Although many NETs may feel more comfortable sending emails or calling via their personal cell phones, we wanted to share this additional and convenient way to contact the coordinators if needed. For Coordinator Ezekiel, search “Ezekiel” (in English) in the search bar.
For Coordinator Keiko, search “Keiko” (also just in English). The title next to the name should say '원어민 코디네이터' (NET Coordinator).

We cannot return any of the documents that you submitted in the initial stage of your application to EPIK (apostilled diploma, CRC, transcripts, etc.). This was stipulated in the initial application packet that you signed and submitted. However, we can provide certified copies (verifying it's a true copy) of original documents. For non-original documents, we can only provide regular photocopies. We cannot guarantee that other provinces or institutions will accept these, so please make sure before making any requests.Copies of documents will take up to 3 to 5 working days to prepare (sometimes longer if it's a busy period at the office) and must be picked up at the coordinator's office at the DMOE. We highly advise that you request copies of documents at least two weeks prior.Understand that requesting these documents sends the message that you are applying for a different position within Korea (there is no other feasible use for official certified copies of your documents).
Towards the end of your contract, the coordinator's office can provide you with a Statement of Employment in English, which verifies your school placement and the time that you worked with the DMOE. Normally, this document is required when applying to other jobs (within or outside of South Korea) to prove prior teaching experience. This letter will be complete with a coordinator's signature and contact information, and will be printed on DMOE letterhead. If you need a 경력증명서 in Korean with an official DMOE stamp, you will need to make a request to the DMOE Civil Affairs Center (민원실) by sending them a faxed in request via any public admin office (including any public school admin office in Korea). This is not something that can be done by the DMOE coordinators. You can also request for a proof of employment (재직증명서) from your school's administrative office. But keep in mind that it will be provided in Korean. Please note that you can only request this particular document while you are employed at that particular school, not after you finish your contract. For an English version, you may have to ask for a favor to your co-teacher or other English faulty ahead of time in getting an English version of it.Our office does not provide reference letters, as we cannot describe your work ethic to your future employer as we do not have any daily work encounters with you. You can however. put one of the coordinators down for a basic work employment reference check but make sure to send us an email to notify us in advance. It is recommended that you ask your school for more personal, work related references as they have seen your work habits on a day to day basis. Use your best judgement when deciding who to ask within your school.
I'm finishing my contract, now what?
Here are some guidelines for what to start preparing if you have decided to finish your contract with the DMOE. Your co-teacher should have received the same information as an attachment to an official document, all in Korean. Please have your co-teacher refer to that while helping you to prepare to leave the country.NOTE: Your contract completion bonus and severance pay may not be available until after you've left Korea. Please be sure to either work something out with your school's financial administrator by providing your home country's bank account information (your name as it is on the bank account, name of bank, bank account number, bank branch number, SWIFT code, etc.) OR have it automatically forwarded from your Korean bank account to an account back home.

Extending Your Visa (Temporary Extension)
Recently, E-2 visas have been issued with 13 month validity, to make up for the fact that your contract period may not start exactly when your visa is granted. However, this is not the case across the board. Due to an error by your embassy, your visa may have been issued for exactly 12 months starting from the time your visa was processed, instead of matching the time period of your actual contract. This will put you in a situation where your visa may expire before the end of your contract. Please double check your visa expiration date!Renewing and Extending E-2 Visas
Severance Pay (퇴직금)
Security Deposit (손해배상담보금)
Apartment
For school provided housing, make sure your apartment is clean and orderly before you leave, since in some situations, the new NET will be moving in the following day or the actual day that you leave. Also, be sure to pay all of your outstanding bills including but not limited to landline phone and internet service, cell phone, electricity, gas, etc. As utilities bills for the last month of your stay is not issued until a month after you have left, please make sure to communicate with your school on how you would like to pay for it. You have until the last day of your contract to move out of the place. You may request to your school if you can move out the morning of the next day. But you must get permission from your school.
Cell Phone & Bank Account
It is your responsibility to take care of your Korean cell phone plan and bank account before leaving the country. Please make sure to terminate your cell phone plan and pay for any remaining bills before departing the country. And close down your Korean bank account if you chose to no longer keep the account active. You may ask your co-teacher for assistance if necessary. However, he/she will not be able to terminate your cell phone plan or bank account for you instead since your name is tied to the account. And so the only way would be for you to physically visit the cell phone service or bank before departing the country. It is advised that you call your cell phone company or bank before making a visit and for any inquiries.
Residence Card
You must return your RC to the Korean Immigration Office in one of the following ways:
- Return the card to an immigration official at the airport at the time of departure (usually the person who checks you out at customs).
- Go to the immigration office, return the card, and obtain a receipt that states you have returned the card (do not lose this!). Then, show the receipt to an immigration official at the time of departure.
Note: The policy on entrance allowance has changed. This new policy will be effective starting August 26, 2018.
Each NET is entitled to a 1,300,000 KRW entrance allowance. The sum should be directly deposited into your bank account by your school after you complete the first 6 months of your contract. However, the Entrance Allowance will not be paid to an Employee who is already living in Korea and is merely changing places of employment or transferring from one Office of Education to another. In that cases, the new Employee shall be entitled to a Settlement Allowance of 300,000 Korean Won (KRW).Neither the Entrance Allowance and Settlement Allowance are offered to Employees who are renewing their contracts.
Contract Completion Bonus (계약완료 지원비)
A Contract Completion Bonus of 1,300,000 KRW is granted to the NET upon the successful completion of their contract. As the money will not be coming directly from the DMOE, but passed from the DMOE to your school, you should work with your school's administrative office to figure out where you would like the money to be sent (i.e. - to a bank account in your home country). The Contract Completion Bonus cannot be processed until after your contract ends. Depending on your school's administration office, this may take up to 2-4 weeks.
The housing allowance (주거지원비) is 500,000 Won, and should be used in lieu of the provided housing from your school. If you are on your way to Korea for the first time and would like to opt for the housing allowance, you must let EPIK (the national office) know prior to the beginning of your contract. You must also provide EPIK with a valid mailing address in Korea prior to arrival in order to qualify for the housing allowance. If you're a renewing teacher, you must let your school know that you'd like to switch to the housing allowance at least 2 months prior to the beginning of your contract (in the case of a renewing teacher who is transferring schools, you must clear it with your new school). This is so that you give your school ample time to apply for the money, and to also close all accounts with your current landlord. You do not require permission from the DMOE to ask for the housing allowance. Additionally, your school is obligated to provide the housing allowance if it is requested. The housing allowance should be included with your paycheck, once a month. You will receive your first housing allowance with your first paycheck for the renewing contract term. So, for example, if you decide to receive housing allowance for your next contract term which is February 26, 2023 to February 25, 2024, then you will receive your housing allowance starting March 25, 2023.Housing allowance is included as taxable income.PLEASE NOTE: If you choose to opt for the housing allowance, it is your sole responsibility to look for, and look after your apartment. Any key deposits, maintenance fees, real estate broker fees..etc must be borne by you. Also, the DMOE and EPIK program officially permits joint housing for married couples only.FURNITURE: If you choose the housing allowance, your school will not be obligated to provide you with any of the furniture that is stipulated in the contract. If you are a renewing teacher, please keep in mind that the furniture from your old apartment is technically the property of your school, and you may not be able to use it once you move. But, of course, you are always free to ask!You cannot switch your housing preference in the middle of your contract; only before your contract begins.
The Offices of Education are not currently hiring level 3 applicants. As such, all applicants MUST qualify for at least a level 2 on the pay scale BEFORE signing the final contract. Please be aware that the pay scale is set by the Offices of Education, not by the NIIED nor the EPIK Office. This pay scale is subject to change between intakes. The final pay level is subject to determination based on the applicant’s teaching experience, qualifications, the internal guidelines of the Offices of Education, etc. Confirmation of the final pay scale will be determined at the contract start date.

2. 150,000 Korean Won (KRW) per month for three (3) or more schools
Additional Information
- TaLK Scholar experience is considered the equivalent of an ESL certificate, not full time teaching experience.
- The amount of provincial pay varies depending on the location within the POE and the number of schools taught.
- A Juris Doctor is equivalent to a non-Education Master's degree. If you'd like to find this on the actual EPIK website, click here. You'll find all of the qualifications for each pay level listed out in detail there.-Pay levels can only be changed BEFORE you sign a new contract. For new in-coming teachers, please alert the national EPIK office if you have any documents (that you weren't able to submit during your initial application stage) that might make you eligible for a higher pay level. You will more than likely have to bring them with you to your orientation. For renewing teachers, pay levels can only be changed during the contract renewal period, and will take effect upon the beginning of your new contract.- For renewing teachers - the deadline to submit any substantiating documents to change pay levels is the day before you sign onto your new contract. If you submit the necessary documents after you sign your new contract, you'll stay at the lower pay level until your next new contract.

In an effort to help our NETs understand what is included and deducted in a normal paycheck, we have created this "Pay Stub Breakdown Sample." It outlines the basic percentages used to calculate your monthly deductions. We always encourage everyone to ask for a monthly pay stub so as to become familiar with the layout and the basics that are included in your monthly payments. If you see any discrepancies, we suggest you ask your financial officer in your school's administrative office. You may ask your co-teacher to help you clarify as well. Please note that each school is responsible for their own payrolls and we at the DMOE have little jurisdiction on how they go about their finances. It is also worth noting that the deduction adjustment period usually occurs in April, after taxes are finished.Your last paycheck may see many adjustments. It is customary for your school to add all of your extra income at the end of your contract period (after school class payments, etc.) in one lump sum, and use it to make calculations for any extra deductions or extra payments that need to be made.

Here is a chart of "approximate monthly taxation based on income." As you can see, it is broken down by monthly income. This should give you an idea of how much income tax will be deducted from your monthly paycheck. Residency tax is calculated as 10% of your income tax.
This applies to those NETs who are NOT renewing their contracts and are leaving South Korea. You can only receive your pension refund when your time in Korea is completely finished. You are still eligible for a refund if you decide to leave early for any reason; the process is the same.Only citizens of Australia, Canada and U.S.A. are eligible. You have been contributing 50% to your pension fund, while the DMOE has been matching that and paying 50% as well up until now. You will be eligible to get a 100% refund ONLY if you are from Australia, Canada or U.S.A., according to the national treaties. You must physically go to the National Pension Office in person, up to one month prior to your departure from the country to request your refund. After the last day of your contract, your school will report the termination of your contract to the pension office. After the school's report and the Immigration Service's confirmation on your departure are complete, your application for the refund will be processed. Please refer to the website for the National Pension Corporation for detailed information about the Pension Plan and the application process for your refund (http://www.nps.or.kr - English website available). Also, a telephone consultation service is available at 1355 (4-digits).Please note: while you can physically submit your application for renewal up to one month prior, your refund request can only be processed starting the day after your contract ends, and it usually takes about one to one and a half months after your departure has been confirmed by the Immigration Office for the funds to be deposited into your account.Required Documents
- Passport
- Residence Card
- Flight Ticket (departure date must be indicated) - flight confirmation/itinerary printed from the internet is acceptable.
- Copy of your bankbook (domestic). Please note: The DMOE does NOT provide pension payments. Your payments will come from the National Pension Office. For more information on the national pension for foreigners, please visit the National Pension Service of Korea's website here.
*This is just a general explanation of severance pay for you to get an idea of how the payment is processed, for the specific breakdown and explanation of your severance pay you will need to inquire your question over to your school's financial administrator. You are entitled to severance pay after the completion of your first year (52 weeks) of work, equaling approximately one month's worth of salary (based on the previous, recently completed contract). If you only stay with the DMOE for only one year, you may collect this at the end of your contract period. If you decide to renew, your severance pay will be held and paid as a lump sum until the completion of your contracts with the DMOE (as according to the "Employee Retirement Benefit Security Act," enacted by the Korean Ministry of Employment and Labor). Your severance pay will then be calculated according to the current pay level at the time of completion. So for instance, if you finish 3 years and your last pay level is 1, then your total severance pay will be calculated based on your level 1 pay (even though you spent 2 years at lower pay levels). The payment cannot be processed until after the completion of your contract, so you will see the money shortly after the end of your contract. Please keep in mind that it may take roughly two to three weeks after your last day of work to receive your severance pay as your school needs to make all the necessary deductions after processing your year end tax settlement, health insurance payment, etc. For those of you finishing your contract, you should work out with your administrative office whether you would like it sent to a bank account back home (the money will come from your school, NOT from the DMOE or EPIK) if you plan to leave right after the last day of the contract or before the payment is made. Please communicate with your school's financial administrator on roughly when you can expect your severance pay.Severance pay is subject to taxation, regardless of your current tax exempt status.
Korean teachers rarely call in sick from work and so the same expectation is expected of NETs to do the same. Most teachers usually go into work and then leave work early if they are not feeling too well. But if you really don't feel well and can't make it to work, make sure to let your school know at least an hour before work. You should NOT text message or email your co-teacher when requesting for a sick day. You NEED TO CALL and talk to your co-teacher so that your co-teacher can do you the favor of letting your school know and assisting you in getting your sick day approved by the school. As per the contract, NETs are entitled to eleven (11) total paid sick days. The first three (3) do not require a doctor's note, regardless of whether or not they are taken consecutively. The remainder will require a doctor's note, which is basically an official statement from the hospital stating the procedure that you had done, and should include any instructions for further convalescence. It should also be signed, dated and stamped with the hospital seal.Any sick leave that exceeds 11 days will be considered unpaid sick days. Those days will be withheld from your paycheck on a pro-rated basis. Only the days that you were to be present at school and were unable to attend will be counted towards the withholding (school/national holidays do not count). If you have to leave early due to sickness or must go to the hospital/doctor's during a regular school day, those should be counted as "early sick leave" (병조퇴). 8 hours of accumulated early sick leave will equal one sick day. Please refer to article 15 of your contract for any more questions regarding sick leave.
Tax Exemption
For more information regarding tax exemption, please click here.
Cash Receipts (현금영수증)
If you are currently subject to income tax, you may want to consider signing up for "Cash Receipts." This is basically a way to keep a log of all of the cash purchases that you make during the fiscal year. While we can't explain the exact calculations, we do know that your total cash purchases for the year are factored in when calculating your income tax during the adjustment period at the end of the year (purchases on your Korean debit/credit card are automatically reported through the link to your RC number). Basically what happens is you're given a card that is linked to your RC number and phone number. Every time you make a cash purchase, you can also have them swipe the card and it will log in your cash purchase. If you don't have the card on you, you can give them your phone number. This will only work after you've signed up for the service. To sign up, please visit their website (you may want to enlist the help of your co-teacher or a Korean friend to help you navigate the site, as it's all in Korean).https://www.hometax.go.kr/websquare/websquare.html?w2xPath=/ui/pp/index.xml

In order to avoid confusion about how your absences (official, health related, unofficial) are being recorded on NEIS (internet portal used by most schools for communications and administrative issues) or on paper in your "duty records book," we have provided a list of typical classifications in Korean and English and how they are used. Note that some of these affect your vacation time, so it is important to keep your own records for your absences to make sure you and your school are on the same page. Also, it's important to look these over and understand when each classification is used, so you aren't surprised later on down the line.

Coming Soon
Daegu English Program Coordinators
As you probably already know, the laws in Korea are less tolerant to those who abuse drugs than, perhaps, those found in some English speaking countries. Possession and abuse of illegal drugs (including marijuana) is seen as a serious offense and may result in deportation and the immediate termination of your contract. As of April 1, 2011, the Korean government requires that anyone working under an E-2 visa must undergo a mandatory medical examination that includes a drug test for Heroin, Cocaine, Opium, and Cannabis. Please be sure to avoid using any of these substances while employed under the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education. This includes while you're on vacation! If any suspicion arises, please cooperate with the DMOE. As a standard procedure, the DMOE will request a medical examination including tests for drugs, and may request a thorough examination including a hair sample test depending on the situation. Also, as stipulated in the contract (Article 18), when requested by the DMOE, a teacher must be available for a medical examination within two (2) working days and provide the result of the examination to the DMOE as soon as possible. The cost of such medical exam is to be borne by the native teacher.
Entrance Allowance (신규계약 지원비)
Annual Medical Exam for Language Instructors With E-2 Visa (E-2 비자 회화 강사용 채용 신체검사)
In order to be eligible for an E-2 visa, you must get a state-sanctioned medical exam, specific for foreigners living in Korea.
New Teachers
New teachers that attend the EPIK orientation will get a medical exam completed during the orientation and receive a medical exam report. EPIK will provide our office with a copy and the other copy will be for you to keep. Your copy can be used in order to suffice for the school's required TB test (more information about this provided below).
Renewing Teachers
Who?:
Every time you renew, you will have to receive a new medical exam regardless of the visa type that you have. What?:
This examination includes both a general health check and a drug test. The general health check is a standard physical medical examination and typically includes a blood sample, urine sample, X-ray, and vision and hearing tests. The drug test must screen for the following four substances: MA (필로폰), COC (코카인), OPI (아편), and THC (대마).When?:
You should only do your medical exam after receiving official confirmation by the DMOE that you have been re-signed. You will need to submit the test results to the coordinators before you make your visa extension appointment at immigration (or for those who have a different visa, before your new contract starts).
- For Spring intake NETs, we ask that you do your medical exam after January 1st, so that it will be in line with the new contract year.
- For Fall intake NETs...Where?:
You must get your medical exam completed at an accredited hospital listed on the Immigration Office's website. The list is usually updated every two months or so and so it is best to double check to make sure that if you are a renewing teacher that the hospital that you previously visited is still listed. We will also send you the most updated list of approved hospitals when renewal time comes around. For university hospitals it is mandatory to call and make an appointment. Some non-university hospitals may also let you make an appointment. We highly advise that you call and make sure the hospital is administrating the medical exam that is required for you to take.Cost?:
The cost varies from hospital to hospital, but ultimately, the cost must be borne by the NET (typically ranges from 70,000 KRW - 150,000 KRW).Checklist:
☑ Does your hospital require an appointment? Not all do, but some (larger ones) do. If you need help making an appointment ask your co-teacher to help call the hospital you are trying to go to, or see if there is an English translator available.
☑ You'll need 2 passport size pictures (3.5cm x 4.5cm)
☑ Ask for (at least 2 copies). One is for the coordinators, and the other one often times can be used for your school (usually the nurse) when they ask you for proof of a latent tuberculosis test later in the year, which was done with your X-ray. Of course, it would be good for you to have your own copy for your own personal records.
(!) Menstruation Timing: Though all hospitals have their own standards for how to prepare for the test, all have the same general guidelines about not being applicable for the urine test if you are menstruating. If you are a person who could be menstruating, we do ask that you time your medical check around your period carefully, unless you want to come back a week later to redo the test and postpone your results.(!) Fasting: Keep in mind that you will have to fast before any blood tests, so try to go to the hospital as early as possible.(!) Avoiding Taking Unnecessary Medication Before: Though every hospital has its own standards, most advise to not take any medicine, such as pain relievers, cold medicine, etc. a week before you take your test since it could ding as a false positive on the drug test.
Results:
The results will more than likely take up to 3~6 days to process, at which point you will have to go back to the hospital to pick them up. The document needs to be in a sealed envelope and requires the hospital seal, which is usually stamped over the envelope and your picture on the document. You can ask the front desk nurses to do this for you by saying, '인비처리 해주세요', when receiving the results (or just show them that sentence if speaking is difficult). Only the copy of the test results going to the DMOE has to be officially sealed. The copies going to yourself or your school do not need to be. Please do not open the sealed copy of your results. It is to be given to the DMOE coordinators to process.
Delivering the Results to the DMOE:
After you have picked up your medical results and the DMOE copy is sealed properly, there are only two approved methods to deliver the results to the coordinators:1. Directly in person (by you) to the DMOE to the coordinators' desks. Directions to the DMOE can be found here.2. Via post office mail:

42123Recently, there has been some confusion regarding the submission of medical checks. While end-of-year evaluations are submitted by your coteachers, your medical check is your personal responsibility and must be submitted directly to the DMOE by you. Please note that having your coteacher or another member of your school staff hand-deliver your medical check to the DMOE is NOT an approved method of submission.
Confirmation:
In-person Submission:
If you turn in your medical check in person to one of the coordinators, your results will be reviewed with you on the spot. You will receive verbal confirmation that everything is clear (or be informed of any issues). As a formality, a confirmation email will also be sent to you at the end of the day or week.Mail Submission:
If you send your results by mail, delivery to our office may take a few days. Mail typically arrives around 10AM, but depending on the coordinators’ schedules, there may be a delay in reviewing the documents. Once your mailed results have been checked, a confirmation email will be sent at the end of the day or week to let you know whether everything is clear or if any issues were found.
The mid-year evaluation was created in order to act as a tool to reflect upon your performance in the previous semester, to provide a platform for discussing your performance within the school, as well as a way to set measurable goals to work towards in the next semester. The Mid-Year Performance Assessment is comprised of two parts; a Self-Assessment, which is to be completed by you (the NET), and a Performance Assessment that will be filled out by the school. The Self-Assessment for DMOE Native English Teachers (NETs) is to provide an opportunity for the NETs to reflect on their teaching and school life from the previous semester. By completing the assessment, the NETs will be identifying their areas of strength as a teacher, and setting goals in personal and/or work related aspects for the following semester with their schools. In order to allow the NETs and the schools to be on the same page to discuss the NETs' teaching and school life, and in order to set goals together, the school will be completing a Mid-Year Performance Assessment which contains the same criteria and questions as the NETs' self-assessment. The schools will submit the performance assessment results to the DMOE through the National Education Information System while the NETs submit the completed self-assessment and comments to the DMOE coordinators via e-mail at [email protected].With the mid-year self-assessment, the NETs will be provided with the year-end work performance evaluation criteria, as the two are very similar. This should work as a guideline to reflect on their teaching throughout the rest of the year. During the year-end evaluation, the NETs will be evaluated on how much they have improved in the areas that were discussed during the mid-year assessment based on the goals that were determined. The mid-year evaluation form and year-end work performance evaluation criteria will be provided to applicable NETs via email.
Here is a brief overview of the renewal process.About 4 months prior to the end of your contract, your school will receive an official document asking for your intent to renew. On this document you can indicate whether you would like to renew and stay at your current school or renew and request a transfer. If you would NOT like to renew, you must fill out the contract renunciation form. From the time the document is sent out, you will be given about 2 weeks to think it over and submit your forms. Once your forms are in, your decision is considered FINAL.While you sign and submit your form, your school will create a work performance evaluation based on the work you've completed up until then. Once this is submitted, the DMOE NET Renewal Committee will determine if you will be granted a renewal contract. The performance evaluation is designed to be balanced so your school cannot give you a failing score based off of one situation. It covers everything from evaluating lesson plans, to NET contribution in the classroom, to general attitude at work, just to name a few categories. We try our best to have the results sent out to your schools within 2 - 2.5 weeks after the deadline for the submissions of the intent forms. Please understand that this information takes time to process and sometimes is held up due to administrative issues. We strive to have the results available well before the contract renewal meeting, but sometimes this may not be the case. Your understanding in this matter is much appreciated.
Regarding Transfers
Unfortunately, we cannot always accommodate transfers (either requested by the school or the NET). This is due to the fact that we are largely limited by which positions become available after the renewal process. Additionally, accommodating specific requests would complicate the placement process in general. So, while you do have the option to request a transfer, please keep in mind that they are granted on a case by case basis, with each case being thoroughly investigated by the Renewal Committee. Final school placement is determined by the DMOE.Click here for more details about transfers!
Renewal Meeting
A renewal meeting will take place where you will receive and sign your new contracts. The coordinators will go over any policy changes, and this will be your opportunity to submit any extra documents to the DMOE (ie - TESOL certificates, reference letters that verify teaching experience...etc). This meeting will take place roughly 2.5 - 3 months prior to the end of your contract, and is considered mandatory (official documents will be sent to your school requesting that you be let out early). Make sure you know your passport number as you will need to know this information for when signing your contracts.
Medical Exam (채용신체검사)
You will need to submit a medical exam when you attend the renewal meeting. If you are unable to do so, we will need it within one week of the renewal meeting. You can either hand deliver the document to our office or you can mail it in. If you decide to mail it, please be sure to use registered mail. Submitting the medical exam report to us is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, not your school's or co-teacher's.
Extending your Visa
You will need to extend your visa to cover the time period of your new contract. Please be sure to confirm and take note of the expiration date on your visa. We strongly suggest renewing your visa prior to leaving for any vacations, so you can avoid any problems coming back into the country. However, we do not suggest applying for a renewal more than a month before the end of your current visa, as you may be turned away. For more details, click here.
Employment Level Changes
Every NET will automatically increase one level by renewing their contracts (except for first year level 1 teachers). So for example, if you've just completed your contract as a level 2 teacher, you will automatically renew as level 2+. If you have documentation that will help you skip a level (ie - TEFL/TESOL, master's degree, teaching experience verification, etc.), you will need to turn those in to the coordinator's office before the start of your new contract. The best time to bring them in is the renewal meeting. If you are unable to do so, we will initially have you sign a contract at the lower level. Once you turn in your documentation we will grant you a new contract at the higher level if it is submitted before the start of your new contract. For more information about employment levels, click here.
Money Matters
Teachers who are finishing their first contract with the DMOE will receive a Contract Completion Bonus of 1,300,000 KRW within one month from the beginning of the renewed term of contract (from the current school). Upon the successful completion of the renewed term of contract, a Renewal Allowance of 700,000 KRW will be provided.Teachers who are finishing their renewed contract with the DMOE will receive a Contract Completion Bonus if 1,300,000 KRW within one month from the beginning og the renewed term of contract along with Renewal Allowance for completing the current contract. Upon the successful completion of the renewed contract period, another payment of 700,000 KRW Renewal Allowance will be received.Severance pay is being accumulated into your severance account with your school. For transferring teachers, the accumulated amount is being transferred to your new school at the beginning of your new contract. Severance pay must be collected in one lump sum when you decide to finish your time with the DMOE. There is nothing you need to do about this process. Please note that severance pay is taxable, even for those who are income tax exempt. You should also receive your security deposit (손해배상담보금) refund, regardless of your transfer status or if you're moving apartments (for NET's finishing their first year only).Your pension deduction may change if your salary is changing for your new contract term. This amount will be collected into the same pension account as the previous year and will be available when your employment in Korea ends (refund available only to citizens of Australia, Canada, and the US). Please see the pension page for more information.
Approximately 3.5 - 4 months prior to the end of your contract, your school will receive an official document asking you for your intent to renew. You may indicate a request for a transfer on this form. We cannot accommodate specific requests for schools, but feel free to note areas or neighborhoods that you would like us to consider. Please note though, that a request for a transfer on this document does not guarantee that you will actually be transferred. This is due partially to the fact that we are largely limited by what positions become available after the renewal process. Also, accommodating specific requests would complicate the placement process. So, while you have the option to request a transfer, please keep in mind that they are granted on a case by case basis, with each case being thoroughly investigated by the DMOE. You will automatically be placed at your current school if your transfer request is denied (assuming that you are eligible for renewal based on your evaluation scores).Transfers will not be considered and cannot be granted during the contract period.
Transferring to a different MOE/POE or Private Institution
If you would like to transfer to a different city, but still within the EPIK scheme, you will have to re-apply from the beginning through EPIK. That means you will need to provide all of your documents, reference letters...etc again. Please do not ask us for your original documents. We are not able to return those to you for legal purposes. Currently, it is our understanding that other institutions can accept official copies of documents (we can provide you with copies with a coordinator's signature). You should double check with your new employer if that is true before requesting copies. Also make sure to give yourself plenty of time, as the copies may take 3-5 work days to prepare. You may send us a request for documents (please specifically list out the documents you need) via email. Please make sure to check out the EPIK website for deadlines and also for any documents that you will need for re-applying.You may also request a "Statement of Employment" from the DMOE for your new job. Click here to request this document.
Basic Information on Opening a Bank Account in Korea
Most, if not all, payments from your school will be a direct deposit, for which you will need a Korean bank account. You can open an account with your Residence Card (RC) after it has been issued. Some banks may open an account for you with your passport or residence certificate (certificate stating that you are in the process of receiving your residence card) but this is not typical. And you will most likely be requested by the bank to revisit once you obtain your RC. If possible, it's best to wait until you receive your physical residence card to open a Korean bank account. In order to open a Korean bank account you will need your RC and proof of employment. You can request and obtain a proof of employment from your school.
Consider getting a check card which is equivalent to a debit or ATM card. When you get the check card, you can sign up for it to work at ATM machines only or have it work at ATM machines and also work as a debit card to pay with at stores. When you open an account, you will receive a bank book. If you would like to use the bank book at ATM machines to withdraw money, make sure your bank book is signed up for this service. Because Daegu Bank is the most prevalent one in the city, you might find it useful opening an account with them. However, if you wish to explore other banks as an option, consider KB Bank (great English website and English services), Woori Bank, Hana Bank, Nonghyup (no international transaction, but very upstanding/ethical practices - the bank of choice for Korea's farmers), Korea Exchange Bank and so on.*It is highly advised that you always have your RC when you visit the bank. You should also have your passport for certain visits such as international transactions.
Remitting Funds to Your Home Account
The first time you send money to your home account (international transfer) it may take up to 40 minutes to an hour to process the paperwork at the bank. Also, you need to take the following documents:- Passport and Residence Card
- Contract
- Pay Stub (provided by your school)
- Account Information of the Receiving BankAfter this first time, you will only need to bring the receipt of the previous transfer, pay stub, and residence card (unless you go to a different branch, at which point it would be wise to bring your passport).*Please note that you can also do international transactions online with certain banks
Online Accounts
Setting up your online account can be a little confusing, as there are a lot of safety measures in place. It's best to ask your co-teacher to help you through the process, but we've outlined the basics. You will have to visit your bank to sign up to create an online account. They will ask you to create your online ID and password at that time. They will also provide you with a security card that is basically full of 4 number codes. You MUST keep this card! You will need it in order to do any transactions online. When creating your account, you will also have to download a security certificate that is specifically linked to your bank account. You can either save this on your computer, or on a USB/external hard drive (you will subsequently need to plug in that USB whenever you try to access your account). Once that is in place, your online account is complete!
Transferring Money to Other Korean Accounts
This can easily be done through an ATM. You will need the receiving party's account number and the name of their bank (KB, KEB, NH...etc). Just follow the instructions on the ATM and wait for a receipt of the transaction.
Direct Deposit
This is available regardless of the bank you ultimately choose. Just simply provide your school's administrative office with your bank information. They will also probably need a copy of your bank book.
Automatic Bill Pay
This option is available to you at any bank. You may want to enlist the help of your co-teacher, or someone else fluent in Korean, if you'd like to set it up online. Or, you can go to a bank teller and ask them to set it up (however, it might be helpful to take your co-teacher with you, or have it written on a piece of paper). All of your bills will be automatically deducted from your account monthly. If you don't have enough money in your account at any given time, the auto-deduct will be canceled and you'll have to set it up again. Make sure to cancel it if you move apartments!
SK, KT, and LG are the three major cell phone service providers in Korea. They all offer a prepaid plan (선불 - 'sun-bul') and a regular contract (후불 - 'hoo-bul'). If you decide to get a regular contract, the service provider may require you to put down a security deposit. This is because foreigners usually do not have an established credit record or history in Korea and they want to protect themselves in case the foreign customer decides to leave the country without paying the bills. Again, most major carriers have English service lines, and many service carriers have special plans for foreigners as well.
Critical Friends Group (CFG) Class Observation and Feedback
Each new NET is assigned to a group of 5 to 6 NETs, this is your CFG group.A. VIDEO RECORDING of your class As part of the CFG Class Observation and Feedback, you are required to record one of your classes and have the recording submitted to the supervising agent assigned to your CFG group. The class you're recording should be a normal / regular class you're teaching, and you do not have to run a special class for the purpose of recording. Please test the video recorder ahead of time to make sure it's set to include most things that are going on in your class (both teachers, all or at least some students, blackboard, screen/TV, etc.) and records audio well as well.B. SENDING video recording and lesson plan via email After recording, it's your responsibility to send the recording of your class with the lesson plan to everyone in your CFG group (4 or 5 NETs excluding yourself), and the supervising agent for your CFG group via email. Please be sure to name your video recording and lesson plan files with your name and school name so the CFG members can identify which is whose. To keep your email address confidential and share them with those only necessary, we will send the email addresses of the group members for each CFG group via email.C. WATCHING the recorded classes and completing LESSON OBSERVATION FORM Once you receive others' videos, you are required to watch the recorded classes and complete a Lesson Observation Form for each video and bring the completed forms (2 copies for each video) to the Workshop. As the observation form will contain your feedback about the recorded class, it will be used for discussion at the workshop. While we believe everyone will not miss the deadline to send the video, please keep each other on check so that you receive everyone's video, being able to complete the lesson observation forms before the workshop.D. completing LESSON REFLECTION FORM for your recorded class After you have video recorded one of your classes, you have to complete the Lesson Reflection Form and submit it before the Teaching Enhancement Workshop, preferably right after you finish recording your class. The completed Lesson Reflection Form can be submitted via email to the coordinators' submission email address, [email protected].2. Teaching Enhancement Workshop. Your attendance is mandatory! At the workshop, you will meet with your CFG group members and supervising agent to go over and discuss your recorded class. You must bring your completed Lesson Observation Form for each video (2 copies each) to the workshop. Please think of this as an opportunity to gain some insight and helpful pointers about your class from the supervising agents and other teacher. The workshop aims to foster meaningful discussions and connections between the NETs so please take advantage of the opportunity to learn from each other.
Lesson Observation Form
The lesson observation form is designed with facilitating discussions in mind, with a "strengths and weaknesses" section below each major category. Please use this section to make thorough notes to use towards a meaningful discussion after the class observation. You may also want to look this over before planning your own open class. A form will be sent as an attachment to those applicable via email.
Public Transportation Around Daegu
During your stay in Korea you will end up taking the public transportation to get around for the most part. Consider purchasing a public transportation card(교통카드)for convenience, and you will get a discount on every ride, and can be used on either the bus or the subway. For adults, fare paid in cash is 1,400 won and fare paid with the public transportation card is 1,250 won for subways and regular buses. For some express buses (that say "급행", the red buses), that stop at major bus stops only, fare paid in cash is 1,800 won and fare paid with the card is 1,650 won. If you transfer within 30 minutes after getting off a bus or subway, the transfer is free (only when you use the public transportation card). For this reason, you must scan your public transportation card when you get off a bus as well. You can buy these cards at Daegu Bank, stands next to bus stops, or at designated subway stations for 2,000 won. Daegu Bank branches and some stands next to bus stops sell miniature cards as a cell phone accessory for 5,000 won to 7,000 won depending on the design. Cards can be charged and/or re-charged at Daegu Bank ATMs, stands next to bus stops or at any subway station. Some banks offer the option of linking your check card to a transportation card. This is an incredibly convenient option. Please discuss the details with your bank to see if it's available.Another bus card option is to go to a convenience store (7-11, GS25, CU, etc.) and getting a Cash Bee card (ask the cashier). The fee for the card is roughly 5,000W. Make sure to add money value onto the card after purchase. Cash Bee is used a lot in Daegu and Busan, but you can used it in other cities as well such as Seoul. Cash Bee cards can be charged at most convenience stores (check the back of the Cash Bee card for specific locations) and even at some local stationary stores.
The Subway
There are 3 main subway lines in Daegu. It would take approximately an hour to ride one line from one end to the other. In order to ride the subway, you have to tap your transportation card while going in and on your way out at the turnstiles. You can purchase single ride tokens at any automated machine (usually has an English option). You need to tap the token on your way in, and then insert the token into the slot on the way out. You can transfer to a bus for free within 30 minutes of getting off the train (when using a transportation card).
The Bus
Daegu has a really great bus system, it just takes some getting used to! The hardest part of using the bus system is that everything is mostly in Korean (however, most buses have a ticker that shows the next and following stops, and those are usually in English). Additionally, each stop now has a map showing the route the bus takes, along with which direction that particular bus will be going (marked with an arrow on the route map - VERY important!). Additionally, most bus stops now have an electronic board that tells you the approximate arrival times of each bus that services that stop. The "급행" (Geup-Haeng) buses are express buses. They cost a little more, but they are very fast, since they make less frequent stops. If you see a bus with a "- 1" (dash 1) at the end of the bus number, that indicates that the bus only goes in one direction. So for instance, there is a 410 bus AND a 410-1 bus. The 410 will go to the end of it route and then double back. The 410-1 bus will only do the route in one direction, continuously. The best way to search bus routes is either on Naver or Google maps. However, it is best to type in Korean when using either of these websites.
Taxis
Taxis are relatively cheap in Korea. The basic fare for a 10 minute ride is about 2,400 won. However, telling a cab driver where you want to go might be a challenge in the beginning. It might be best to carry with you a small piece of paper that has your home address and landmark in Korean so you can simply show it to the cab driver. Ask your co-teacher to print out a sheet of labels with your address in Korean. This may also come in handy when you are filling out applications at the bank, hospital, immigration office, fitness center, etc. Also, taxis don't usually do well with specific addresses. You'll find that it works much better if you use landmarks to tell your cab-driver where you'd like to go (for example: "Lotte Department Store," or "Across the street from Homeplus, Chilsung").
Security Deposit (손해배상담보금)
For your very first contract with the DMOE, you will get 300,000 KRW deducted from your first two months' paycheck, totaling 600,000 KRW.Please make sure that you sign the consent form allowing your school to hold this money from your paychecks. If you do not sign the form then you will have to go through the hassle of transferring the money to your school's bank account, 300,000 KRW for the first two months, totaling 600,000 KRW.Understand that this safety deposit doesn't just cover any potential liabilities for your apartment, but also any school property or any other fees that your school may have to incur due to your direct actions. Your security deposit of 600,000 KRW should be refunded to you during the last month of your first contract as long as there are no damages done to the school provided housing, school property, no costs to pay, etc. If the damage or costs incurred exceeds the amount of the security deposit, then it will be deducted from your final paycheck, as stipulated in your contract (Article 12, Clause 1 and 8).Your security deposit may also be used to cover any other liability, claims, suits, losses, costs and/or legal fees that your school may incur due to any direct actions by the NET (Article 20). In other words, it is not strictly related to your apartment. Please remind your co-teacher or financial administrator when the time comes that you should receive your security deposit back. As long as there are no costs that needs to be deducted from your security deposit as mentioned above, then you should receive the full amount back.No security deposit will be deducted at the start of any subsequent contracts.
You might be eligible for tax exemption based on your citizenship (everyone except those from Canada or Ireland). You will need to submit your residency certificate to your school's financial office. They must then use that to register you as officially tax exempt with the district tax office (depending on where your school is located). DO NOT assume that tax exemption is automatic based on your nationality!Until then, you may be subject to continued taxation. If you know that you will not be receiving your residency certificate for some time, it is strongly suggested that you opt to be taxed in the meantime. You may be able to get a refund for what taxes you paid while waiting for your residency certificate (have your financial administrator work it out with the tax office). The worst case scenario is asking your school to not tax you while you wait for your residency certificate, and having to pay all of the accumulated taxes as one lump sum if for some reason your residency certificate does not come through. But this really depends on the tax office and what they will allow. While the actual filing of taxes is handled by your school, we cannot stress enough that applying for tax exemption is solely your responsibility. It is up to you to apply, receive, and submit your residency certificate to your school. It is also up to you to request a pay slip to make sure that taxes are indeed, not being taken out of your income. You may ask your co-teacher and/or financial administrator for any help along the process, but ultimately it is your money and your responsibility.Understand that you or your school needs to take your residency certificate to the school's local tax office to register you as tax exempt in order for it to take effect (simply showing your school your residency certificate is not the entire process). Although your residency certificate is valid for 2 years, there is the possibility that the tax office will only register you tax exempt for one, due to your contract period and visa validity only being one year. If that is the case, you will need to go back to re-register for your second year of tax exemption. They will accept a copy of the residency certificate. Therefore it is vital that you keep multiple copies of your residency certificate on hand. If your school is not clear on the process of registering you for tax exemption, please ask your co-teacher and financial administrator to check the NET Program Guidebook(원어민 영어보조교사 관리 및 활용 길라잡이) available on the official DMOE website. In the most recent edition, the information that they need is under the "administrative matters" section (행정관리).If you require paperwork to submit to your tax agency back home, it is best to ask your financial officer to provide you with a copy of your latest "원천징수영수증." This document is only available after your taxes have been processed by the Korean tax agency, so it may not be available until well into March or April. This document lists out your income, taxes paid, etc for the fiscal year.Click here for more information on residency certificates.
NETs (with the exception of those from Canada or Ireland) have the option of tax exemption. In order to opt out of taxation here in Korea, you'll have to provide your school with a Residency Certificate. It's best if you are able to at least start the application process before arriving here, but if necessary, you can have it sent to you here (or directly to your school). If you don't receive it in time, you may be subject to taxation for the period before you submit your residency certificate. If you submit the certificate within the same fiscal year (same as a calendar year in Korea), you may be able to apply for a reimbursement. If you aren't able to submit it before the close of the fiscal year, there is a chance that you will not be able to get a reimbursement for the taxes you have already paid. Any inquiries regarding this should be made to your home country's tax office and/or the Korean tax office. We are not tax officials! For questions outside of what you find on this website, please refer to your specific country's tax service organization. For questions about Korean taxes, please ask your school's financial administrator. For more information about taxes in Korea, please go here. How to get more information about obtaining a residency certificate, by country:U.S.A.

Congratulations on completing your TESOL/TEFL/CELTA certification!First thing - EPIK requires you complete a 100 hour program, minimum. Anything below that will not be accepted.Once you complete your program, you have one of three options to submit your certificate to us.Send or bring in the original certificate to the DMOE. The certificates usually come with a cover letter, explaining the program along with some notes on your performance. Please include that as well.If you receive an electronic copy of your certificate, you can go ahead and email that to us. We will, however, need you to bring in the original so we can verify it's authenticity. Once you bring in the original, we will just keep the copy, so you'll be able to keep the original for yourself. You can send us an electronic copy along with the email address of someone from the institution that we can email to verify your completion of the program. If we do not hear back from them, you will have to bring in an original copy. Please note that changes in pay scale can only be made either before you begin your new contract or during the contract renewal period. If you are in the process of receiving your certification and are worried you won't have it by the time of renewal contract signing, no worries! You will just sign a contract at the lower level, and once you get us your certificate (through one of the methods listed above) we will create a new contract for you at the higher level as long as it is before the start of your new contract.
If the school is providing you housing, you will need the Confirmation of Residence/Accommodation (거주/숙소제공 확인서) for when you apply for your visa and/or for when you renew your visa . This is needed to prove your address in the absence of a rental contract listing you as the tenant. For more information about renewing your visa, go to the 'Visa' tab above or call the Immigration Hotline at 1345 (English speakers available). Please find the original form on the Immigration Office's website. The form that we provided below is an example form with notes indicated in blue for school use only.
How to obtain a Residence Card (외국인등록증)
Your Residence Card (RC) will be your identification card during your stay in Korea. You must carry it at all times! You should apply for your RC at the Daegu Immigration Office within 90 days of your arrival in Korea. You will need this card in order to open a Korean bank account, get your paycheck deposited, purchase a cell phone, and other important things. It is highly recommended that you apply for your RC as soon as possible. Your co-teacher should be aware that you'll be needing this card ASAP, but if nothing is mentioned in the first few days or so, feel free to ask about it. You must make an online reservation online before your visit on the HiKorea website. The availability of appointment times is very limited and it is normal for the first available appointment to be at least a week (sometimes up to a month) ahead. Take that into consideration when you are scheduling a visit to the Immigration Office.Since there are two large intakes of NETs each year, the Immigration Office tends to be extremely busy around those times. E-2 Visa Does Not Cover Full Time on Contract
We have had some issues in the past with NET's saying their E-2 visas did not cover the full time that is listed on their contracts (for example, the visa had an expiration date of February 17 when the contract didn't end until February 25). Originally, an E-2 visa was automatically eligible for a 12 month stay in the country, which if done correctly, should have been just enough time to cover the contract in entirety. A few years back, Immigration started allowing 13 months as a courtesy to our NET's, understanding that most people needed the extra time to tie up loose ends or do some traveling before leaving the country. However, even after this alleged change, we were still getting a few NET's that still had visas that ended too early. After looking into this issue, with the help of EPIK, it came to light that some embassies were still issuing E-2 visas with only 12 months, starting from the day that the actual visa was issued (not starting on the first day of the contract). Immigration can only follow what was initially issued by the embassy in your home country when making your RC. Unfortunately, if you find yourself in this situation, there is nothing to be done once your visa has been issued. EPIK has been so kind as to send official documents to all of the embassies (departments in charge of English education), asking them to issue 13 months visas for E-2 EPIK visa holders. Hopefully, if everyone complies, we should not see this problem anymore in the future.
